Gender Differences in Peer Recognition by Economists

We study the selection of Fellows Econometric Society, using a new data set publications and citations for over 40,000 actively publishing economists since early 1900s. Conditional on achievement, we document large negative gap in probability that women were selected as 1933-1979 period. This became positive (though not statistically significant) from 1980 to 2010, past decade has become highly significant, with 100% increase female authors relative males similar citations. The boost affects qualified candidates (in top 10% authors) no effect bottom 90%. Using nomination 30 years, find key proximate role Society's Nominating Committee this shift. Since 2012 had an explicit mandate nominate women, its nominees enjoy above-average election success (controlling achievement). Looking beyond gender, shifts premium geographic diversity: mid-2000s, both significantly more likely elect outside US.
